Very Rare and original, 1920's Anheuser Busch Brewing Company, Prohibition Era Tin Lithographed Bevo Malt Soda Fountain Beverage / Near-Beer Advertising Bottle Cap in outstanding original condition.
This very well preserved, Bevo Bottle Cap measures 1 1/8" in diameter and features a fantastic image of the Anheuser Busch Bevo mascot "Renard the Fox" seated on a bench and wearing green pants. Renard holds a Mug of Bevo in his right hand and chews on a turkey leg that he holds in his left hand.
"Bevo" was a non-alcoholic malt beverage, or near beer, brewed in the United States by the Anheuser-Busch company beginning in the early 20th century. Bevo enjoyed its greatest success during the time of prohibition, when beer, wine and distilled liquors, were made illegal for thirteen years. The Anheuser-Busch company started brewing Bevo when alcoholic beverages were prohibited in 1916 by the United States armed forces. Production rose greatly with national prohibition in 1919, and Bevo was by far the most popular of the many "cereal beverages" or "near beers" of the time. At the peak of its popularity in the early 1920s, more than five million cases of Bevo were sold annually. Labels on the bottles billed it as "Bevo the Beverage". The name "Bevo" was coined from the word "beverage" and the Slavic language word for beer "pivo", and was pronounced "Bee-vo". Some Bevo advertising featured the character "Renard the Fox" (based on the protagonist of a medieval French folk-tale). Bevo was produced as a bottled beverage and in Jugs for sale in Soda Fountains.
There is no text on the Bottle Cap but we have been told that examples of this Cap in good condition are exceptionally rare. The Cap retains its original cork liner and the lithography is exceptionally well preserved.
This charming 1920's Anheuser Busch / Bevo Near Beer Bottle Cap is not a reproduction, reissue or restrike but is an original 1920's Bottle cap used to seal a bottle of Anheuser Busch’s Prohibition era Malt Beverage.
This rare and original, Tin Lithograph Anheuser Busch Bevo Bottle Cap is in very good to excellent condition. The colors are bright and vibrant and the surface clean and crisp. There is a VERY tiny dimple at 2 o’clock on the rim of the Cap that is the only evidence of the use of a bottle opener to remove the Cap. Otherwise there is no physical damage of any kind. The surface lithography is very well preserved with only a handful of TINY nicks to the surface.
